Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a key contributor to helping your body in the healing process. The antioxidant also works to protect cells from the effects of free radicals that can contribute to medical conditions like heart disease and cancer.1
Vitamin C IVs can be beneficial for getting enough of the nutrient as we don’t naturally make it. Typically, we rely on getting vitamin C from our diet by eating foods like citrus, berries, cabbage and more. But if you’re battling a vitamin C deficiency, a vitamin C booster or IV therapy treatment can help.
Vitamin C infusion FAQs
Here’s a look at some commonly asked questions about vitamin C infusions as they relate to the body’s healing process.
Does vitamin C boost your immune system?
“Vitamin C contributes to immune defense by supporting various cellular functions of both the innate and adaptive immune system,” according to a 2017 study published in Nutrients.2
In a Cleveland Clinic article, Dr. John McDonnell, a pediatric immunologist, said he loves vitamin C because of its importance in a functioning immune system.3
“It helps your immune cells get to the site of an infection and then helps those immune cells eliminate whatever’s infecting your body,” McDonnell said in the article.
How long does IV vitamin C stay in your system?
There are conflicting reports about how long vitamin C from an infusion stays in your body. Water-soluble vitamins like vitamin C typically work through the system in a couple of days. At least one study has shown vitamin C to have a half-life of about two hours, meaning the amount present in the body reduces every two hours.4
Can you mix glutathione and vitamin C in IV?
While you can receive both glutathione and vitamin C in a single visit, the two nutrients can’t be mixed together in a single IV.
