What is Ozone IV Therapy?

Ozone therapy is one of many IV treatments that can work in place of or alongside other medical treatments. But what is IV Ozone therapy and how can it help you? There are various benefits to this type of treatment, and working with a trusted provider can help you experience them to the fullest extent.

What Is Ozone Therapy?

So what exactly is IV Ozone Therapy? Ozone therapy involves the delivery of ozone ions to the bloodstream with an IV injection. One molecule of ozone is made up of three oxygen atoms — O3 — and it is a water-soluble natural gas. This water solubility allows the gas to dissolve in the bloodstream easily and deliver its benefits throughout the body.

Ozone was discovered in the 1840s and became a medical treatment shortly after discovery. While there have been unsafe uses of ozone, such as pumping it into rooms as an air purifier, its medical uses have proven beneficial for various illnesses, both chronic and acute. The key to using ozone safely as a therapy is using the correct amount and the right routes of administration, such as through an IV.

Now that you have a better understanding of ozone therapy itself, What is an ozone therapy IV? In the ozone therapy process, a licensed medical provider will typically complete a process called autohemotherapy. This process involves taking a sample of blood from a patient, mixing ozone with the sample and reintroducing the blood back into the body for circulation. Medical practitioners will create the ozone for IV therapy through a medical-grade ozone generator. These devices take oxygen from the air and add energy to the O2 molecules to cause them to split. Once they split, they can recombine with other oxygen atoms to cr

Why Get Ozone Therapy?

Ozone therapy is capable of treating a wide range of illnesses and chronic conditions, from fibromyalgia and diabetes to asthma. Ozone treats these conditions through its interactions with living organisms in the body, like viruses, bacteria and fungi.

When ozone is in the bloodstream, it oxidates the phospholipids and lipoproteins in the bacterial cell envelope, disrupting the integrity of the cell and preventing it from growing and spreading. In fungi, ozone can inhibit cell growth, and the gas can also disrupt the reproductive cycle of viruses through peroxidation. Bacteria, fungi and viruses are the organisms most commonly responsible for health issues, and ozone can lessen their effects.

Ozone also supports healthy cells. When cells have a weak enzyme coating, they’re more vulnerable to viral invasion, but they’re also more susceptible to oxidation which leads to elimination from the body. Ozone can start the oxidation process, causing the weak cells to leave the body and healthy cells to take their place.

In the bloodstream, ozone also increases the rate of red blood cell glycolysis, which leads to an increase in oxygen delivered to the tissues. Additionally, the gas can stimulate enzyme production, which protects cell walls and helps eliminate free radicals in the body. Another positive impact of ozone includes the activation of the immune system for fighting off illness.

Are There Any Negative Side Effects to Ozone Therapy?

While there are many positive health effects with ozone therapy, people who undergo ozone IV therapy may notice some side effects following treatment. Ozone can trigger what is called a Herxheimer reaction or a healing reaction. When ozone enters the body, it starts a detoxification process that clears out the unwanted substances in your body. While cleansing your body of these toxins is largely a healthy process, the initial stages may leave you feeling ill before you feel better.

A Herxheimer reaction is a common occurrence in a range of treatments. It’s the idea that your body may feel worse before it feels better. Typically, symptoms of a healing reaction include flu-like feelings like muscle soreness and fatigue.

Symptoms can begin a few hours or a few days after treatment. The duration of this reaction depends on the condition you’re treating and your body’s general ability to respond to detoxification. For example, people with Lyme disease may experience a longer healing reaction than someone with diabetes. Some people experience these symptoms for a few hours, and others experience them for up to a week.

The good news is that these flu-like symptoms are a sign your body is responding positively to the ozone, and you can experience the benefits of the therapy once the detoxification process is complete. You can support your body during the healing reaction by drinking plenty of water, getting enough sleep and taking probiotics or eating probiotic foods.

While ozone has many beneficial effects as an IV therapy, it is dangerous to inhale. Do not attempt any form of ozone therapy at home to prevent the risk of inhalation. An experienced medical professional is the best person to handle the process.

When to Get Ozone Therapy

Given the benefits of ozone therapy, many types of people may find this treatment valuable to their health and wellness. Ozone therapy can be beneficial for you if:

  • You have a chronic condition: Type I diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and complex regional pain syndrome are all examples of chronic conditions that can benefit from ozone therapy. Many chronic conditions are exacerbated by viral loads in the body, and ozone can help reduce them. With reduced pathogens in your body, you may find your chronic condition less symptomatic and easier to manage.
  • Other antibiotic treatments aren’t working: Ozone and antibiotics are both capable of reducing bacteria in the body. You might turn to antibiotic treatments if you’re ill, but they may not always be effective. If you’ve found that antibiotics aren’t helping your ailment, ozone therapy may offer the results you’re looking for.
  • You need an immune system boost: With ozone in your bloodstream, your immune system receives a boost and can work harder. While these immune system boosts are valuable to chronic conditions, they can also be helpful for anyone looking to prevent sickness during cold and flu season. Ozone therapy has even been used to treat COVID-19 pneumonia
  • Your heart and lungs need support: Increasing oxygen delivery to your tissues with ozone can support a healthy heart and lungs. Strengthening these critical organs is valuable to those who have already experienced a heart attack or stroke in their lifetimes. It can also be a helpful treatment for those who are at risk of these events.
  • You’re looking for anti-aging treatments: While ozone is known to offer health benefits like increasing oxygen to tissues and reducing viral loads, ozone therapy has also offered positive secondary effects. Ozone can activate anti-inflammatory signaling, release growth factors and improve blood circulation, which can lead to anti-aging effects like increased energy levels and healthier skin, hair and nails.

🌿 Story time with our nurse: A 40-year-old client came in struggling with extreme fatigue, brain fog, weakness, and numbness in her hands and feet. After running functional labs, we discovered high arsenic levels—signs of arsenic poisoning. With her active gardening lifestyle, exposure had accumulated over time. Our treatment plan included IV chelation therapy with disodium EDTA, helping to safely remove toxins and restore energy, clarity, and overall wellness.
Early detection of arsenic poisoning is key to recovery. Addressing arsenic poisoning with proper lab testing and treatment can dramatically improve quality of life.
