Vitamin D, also known as calciferol, is best known as being produced by UV rays from sunlight hitting the skin and leading to vitamin D synthesis.1 But with long workdays indoors, sometimes it can be challenging to get enough sunlight.
While vitamin D can also be obtained from some foods and dietary supplements, some people may find it easier or more efficient to get vitamin D injections. In this blog, we’ll address the benefits of vitamin D shots and the causes of vitamin D deficiency to help you decide whether injections are right for you.
Vitamin D shot benefits
Vitamin D is necessary to help build and maintain healthy bones because it helps absorb calcium, which is the key component of bones. According to the Mayo Clinic, vitamin D’s “anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and neuroprotective properties support immune health, muscle function and brain cell activity.”2
Research has shown that vitamin D can help treat inherited bone disorders, psoriasis and rickets; prevent osteoporosis; and reduce the risk of multiple sclerosis and bone fractures, according to the Mayo Clinic.
At IV Elements, we offer vitamin D booster shots that can be administered with a vitamin therapy treatment or as a standalone injection.
What causes vitamin D deficiency?
Vitamin D deficiency is incredibly common, affecting roughly half of the world’s population, according to the Cleveland Clinic.3
Vitamin D deficiency can be caused by a lack of the nutrient in your diet or sunlight. Alternatively, your body may not absorb or use vitamin D properly. Certain medical conditions (cystic fibrosis, obesity and kidney disease) and medications (laxatives and prednisone), as well as weight loss surgeries, can cause a vitamin D deficiency.
In children, a severe lack of vitamin D can cause rickets, which can present with muscle weakness, bone pain and/or joint deformities.
These symptoms aren’t as obvious in adults. In fact, a vitamin D deficiency in adults may not have symptoms at all. But common signs include fatigue, bone pain, muscle weakness, and/or a change in mood.
