Hardshell hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or hardshell HBOT, is a treatment where you rest inside a rigid, sealed, pressurized chamber while breathing 100% medical-grade oxygen. The pressure allows your body to absorb significantly more oxygen than at normal atmospheric pressure, delivering it deep into blood, tissue, and cells where circulation is often limited.1 Research has studied hyperbaric oxygen therapy for wound healing, tissue repair, oxygen delivery to damaged areas, and recovery pathways, with growing evidence for neuroplasticity, cognitive support, and concussion recovery.1,2
Hardshell HBOT is distinct from softshell mild HBOT (mHBOT). Softshell units are soft-sided fabric chambers that reach around 1.3 ATA with room-air oxygen enrichment, and the FDA has cleared them for only one use. The hardshell chamber at IV Elements Hoboken reaches 1.3 to 2.2 ATA with 100% medical-grade oxygen, delivering substantially more oxygen to blood and tissue than a softshell unit can.3

Recommended Frequency
Dependent on your condition and treatment plan. Many clients start with a series of 10 to 40 hardshell HBOT sessions, followed by maintenance sessions based on response and goals.
Who It's For
Clients come to our Hoboken HBOT center when conventional treatment has only partially helped or recovery is taking longer than expected. Common reasons include slower healing after surgery or injury, lingering fatigue and brain fog, post-concussion symptoms, chronic inflammation, Lyme, long COVID, and athletic recovery between training cycles.
What sets IV Elements apart is the care around the chamber. You know your nurses by name, settle into a space with soft lighting, warm neutrals, and oversized reclining chairs, and are monitored by the same certified ER-trained team through every session. Many clients also pair hardshell HBOT with EBOO ozone, high-dose vitamin C, or peptide therapy.
Hoboken is minutes from Manhattan via PATH, making us a practical option for NYC residents who want clinical-grade hardshell HBOT without settling for a softshell wellness lounge.

Pre-Treatment Lab Testing
Yes. Before your first hardshell HBOT session, our certified ER-trained nurses conduct a thorough health history review and safety screening to confirm you are a safe candidate for the chamber.
Functional lab testing may also be recommended to personalize your treatment plan and track your progress. If you have any of these labs completed within the last year, they may not need to be repeated.
Book NowWe screen for contraindications including pregnancy, pacemakers or implanted medical devices, uncontrolled asthma, recent eye surgery, and claustrophobia. Certain conditions require medical clearance from your primary care provider before starting HBOT.
Measures CRP and other inflammatory markers to track baseline inflammation and your response to hardshell HBOT over the course of treatment.
Evaluates vitamin, mineral, and cellular energy markers that influence how well your body uses the oxygen delivered during HBOT.
Assesses hormonal and metabolic imbalances that affect recovery and healing timelines.
Measures oxidative stress levels and determines whether antioxidant support like glutathione or high-dose vitamin C would complement your HBOT plan.
Confirms your body can safely process the metabolic demand of repeated HBOT sessions.
