What Does Ozone Therapy Treat?

  • February 6, 2023

Over the past few years, ozone therapy has become increasingly popular as an alternative medicine treatment. Ozone therapy can be delivered in several ways. In IV-based methods, blood is drawn, exposed to a mixture of ozone and oxygen, and reinfused into the body. Other approaches include rectal or ear insufflation and prolozone injections. Some preliminary research suggests these processes may improve oxygen flow, support immune function, and strengthen your body’s natural antioxidant responses.

While ozone therapy hasn’t been approved by the FDA, many integrative health practitioners use it as a complementary approach alongside conventional care to help people manage various conditions. Here are the most common conditions treated with ozone therapy, along with how you can explore it in New Jersey, New York City, and Philadelphia.

What conditions does ozone therapy treat?

Though research is ongoing, some alternative medicine practitioners think ozone therapy could possibly help people manage a number of conditions, including aging-related conditions, fatigue, fibromyalgia, autoimmune conditions, musculoskeletal disorders, respiratory conditions, Lyme disease, mold-related illness, circulatory conditions, diabetes, herpes simplex virus (HSV), complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), HIV/AIDS, and pneumonia caused by COVID-19.

Aging-related conditions

Oxidative stress can make signs of aging worse, like less elastic skin, slowed wound healing, and more inflammation. Some practitioners think these issues could possibly be treated with ozone because of its effects on antioxidant defenses.

Fatigue

If you’re tired a lot of the time, it might be because too much oxidative stress has built up in your body. That’s why some people say ozone therapy could help with fatigue, but we need more research to know if it actually works in this way.

Fibromyalgia

Many wellness clinics promote ozone therapy as a way to reduce chronic pain and fatigue linked with fibromyalgia, but more research is needed.

Autoimmune conditions

It’s possible that ozone therapy might help people with autoimmune conditions like lupus and multiple sclerosis because ozone might have positive effects on your immune system, inflammatory responses, and antioxidant defenses.

Musculoskeletal disorders

One study showed that ozone therapy could help some patients better respond to methotrexate, which is a medication for rheumatoid arthritis. Some researchers have also found that ozone therapy might reduce pain and improve quality of life in people with knee osteoarthritis. Many people get the treatment for other musculoskeletal disorders as well, but we need more studies on how well it works.

Respiratory conditions

Ozone changes the way your body uses oxygen. That’s why some people think that there’s a chance it might help with breathing conditions like asthma, chronic bronchitis, and COPD, though more studies are needed.

Lyme disease

Lots of wellness practitioners say that ozone therapy could potentially help treat bacterial infections like Lyme disease. That’s because ozone can kill bacteria in test tubes and on surfaces, but we don’t know yet if it can actually kill bacteria in humans.

Mold-related illness

Ozone can kill mold and mycotoxins (toxic compounds produced by mold) on surfaces in laboratory settings, so some researchers think it might help treat mold-related illness in humans.

Circulatory conditions

Some say ozone therapy could help with conditions that affect blood flow, like peripheral artery disease and venous insufficiency. That’s because ozone might improve oxygen delivery and lower oxidative stress.

Diabetes

Research suggests that ozone therapy might help people heal from diabetic foot ulcers when used with conventional FDA-approved treatments. Some think it could also help with diabetic inflammation and diabetic peripheral neuropathy.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV)

Ozone therapy might help support the immune system and kill harmful microorganisms, so some practitioners think it could help protect against viruses like herpes simplex virus (HSV-1 and HSV-2). More human studies are needed to investigate this effect. Learn more about HSV treatment with 10-pass ozone therapy.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)

Some CRPS patients try ozone therapy to help out with pain, swelling, and inflammation, though researchers are still trying to see if it’s actually a helpful option.

HIV/AIDS

Integrative practitioners have looked at whether ozone therapy’s immune effects could play a complementary role in HIV/AIDS management. But there’s no clinical evidence supporting this use, and ozone therapy should never replace prescribed antiretroviral therapy. Patients with HIV/AIDS should always work with their infectious disease physician on any complementary therapies.

Pneumonia caused by COVID-19

Studies suggest that ozone therapy could help people suffering from pneumonia caused by COVID-19, but existing research is limited to small studies — the most-cited study (Hernández et al., 2021) included only 18 patients. Larger trials are needed.

Is ozone therapy used for cancer?

Some research suggests that ozone therapy could possibly be an effective complementary treatment for cancer patients getting conventional FDA-approved treatments like chemotherapy and radiation. That’s because it might help with the side effects of those treatments. But most studies so far have only used laboratory and animal models, so more human research is needed. Ozone therapy is not FDA-approved as a cancer treatment and should never replace conventional oncology care.

ConditionHow ozone may helpEvidence in humans
FatigueMay boost energy by reducing oxidative stressNo confirmed evidence from clinical studies
FibromyalgiaMay reduce pain and fatigue by influencing immunity and oxidative stressVery limited evidence
Autoimmune conditions (lupus, multiple sclerosis)May boost immunity, increase antioxidant effects, and reduce inflammationExploratory research only
Musculoskeletal disorders (rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis)May decrease pain by reducing inflammationLimited small trials
Respiratory conditions (asthma, COPD)May improve oxygen flowVery limited evidence
Lyme diseaseMay kill bacteriaNo evidence from human studies
Mold-related illnessMay kill mold or mycotoxins (toxic compounds produced by mold)No evidence from human studies
Circulatory conditionsMay improve circulation by supporting oxygen delivery and decreasing oxidative stressSome small evidence
DiabetesMay improve diabetic foot ulcer healing, improve blood sugar control, and decrease inflammationSome small evidence for foot ulcer healing, no strong evidence for blood sugar control or inflammation
Herpes simplex virus (HSV)May improve immune response and kill virusesNo evidence from human studies
Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)May reduce inflammation, pain, and swellingVery limited evidence
HIV/AIDSMay strengthen immunityVery limited evidence
Pneumonia caused by COVID-19May inactivate viruses and improve oxygen flowSome small evidence
CancerMay support recovery alongside FDA-approved treatmentsNo evidence from human studies
Evidence Summary: Ozone therapy is not FDA-approved for the treatment of any condition. Individual response varies.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many ozone therapy sessions do I need?It depends on your health and what you’re looking to get out of treatment. You might only need a couple sessions if you want help with a more general issue like fatigue, and you might need 10 or more sessions for something more serious, like a chronic health condition.
Is ozone therapy safe?Ozone therapy can be safe if you get it from a licensed healthcare provider. But it can cause some side effects like fatigue, headache, nausea, dizziness, and some skin irritation in the spot where you got injected. There’s also a small chance of more serious side effects, and these include inflamed veins, red blood cell damage, and cardiovascular problems. You’re more likely to have these side effects if your treatment isn’t supervised, and that’s why we supervise all treatments and go over your health history to check for contraindications first — including G6PD deficiency, pregnancy, active bleeding disorders, hyperthyroidism, and recent cardiac events.
How is ozone therapy administered?Ozone therapy can be given in a few different ways. The most common way is major autohemotherapy (MAH). That’s when a practitioner draws a small amount of blood into a sterile container, mixes it with ozone, and reinfuses it through the same IV line. Other ways include:
  • 10-pass ozone therapy, which repeats MAH up to 10 times in a single session
  • EBOO, which circulates blood through a specialized machine that exposes it to ozone before it’s reinfused
  • injections
  • ear or rectal insufflation
What’s the difference between 10-pass ozone and EBOO?10-pass ozone therapy treats blood in repeated cycles by drawing it, ozonating it under hyperbaric pressure, and reinfusing it up to 10 times in one session. EBOO, on the other hand, uses a continuous system that circulates blood through a specialized machine, , where it’s exposed to ozone before being returned to the bloodstream. Learn more about the different types of ozone therapy.
Is ozone therapy FDA-approved?No. Ozone therapy has not been approved by the FDA to treat any health condition.
Where can I get ozone therapy in NJ?You can get ozone therapy in NJ at IV Elements’ drip lounges in Hoboken, Parsippany, Asbury Park, and Marlton, plus our partnership location at Namaste Spa in Ridgewood. We also offer in-home ozone treatments throughout NJ, NYC, Philadelphia, and Bucks County, PA.
How much does ozone therapy cost in NJ?It depends on your needs and the clinic. You can explore current pricing on our treatment menu.
