What to Expect at an IV Therapy Appointment
Whether you are preparing for a session or looking into IV therapy, rest assured that IV administration is a simple process. While getting an IV at your home vs. in a clinic will be slightly different due to the environment, the basic procedure is the same.
A nurse will clean the insertion site on your arm with an antiseptic wipe before administering your IV. Once the needle is properly in place, the vitamins, minerals, electrolytes and medication in the IV bag will drip down the tube into your bloodstream at a controlled rate.
During the procedure, you can work on your laptop, read your favorite book, watch a movie or take a nap. If you need to go to the bathroom, let your nurse know. Otherwise, we ask that you refrain from strenuous activities while receiving an IV drip.
Does Getting an IV Hurt?
Our medical staff members are skilled in IV administration, so they can expertly insert your IV needle where it will be most comfortable for you. Also, if you are afraid of needles, we will warn you in advance to give you enough time to look away.
You shouldn’t feel any pain once your IV is secure. Communicate with your nurse if your IV feels uncomfortable, and they will assess the insertion site.
How Long Will an IV Therapy Appointment Take?
Your IV therapy appointment’s length will vary depending on what treatment you order. Our average timeframes include:
- 500cc bags: 25 to 30 minutes
- 1000mL bags: 45 minutes
- Specialty IVs: At least one hour
