We’ve all heard about the importance of staying hydrated, and it’s easy to forget how important this rule is. What starts out as just feeling thirsty can quickly become something much more serious if you don’t address it right away. But how long does it take to cure dehydration and fully bounce back?

  • Mild dehydration is easy to treat by drinking water and resting and often resolves in less than 30 minutes. It is very common and doesn’t usually cause long-term side effects (as long as it is treated properly). 
  • Moderate dehydration is more intense and typically requires IV treatment and professional care
  • Severe dehydration can be life-threatening and should be treated in an emergency room. 

Both moderate and severe dehydration can damage your health in the long term, affecting your urinary system, cardiovascular system, and neurological function. 

Causes of Dehydration 

Dehydration doesn’t just happen after a hard workout or a big night out; there are many scenarios that can cause dehydration. These include: 

  • Not drinking enough water: The simplest cause of dehydration is failing to drink enough water. This can happen for a few reasons: maybe you’re traveling and don’t have access to safe drinking water, or you’re so busy you forget to rehydrate. No matter what your day looks like, it’s important to drink enough water. 
  • Illness: If you have an illness that causes vomiting or diarrhea, you can lose a large amount of fluid in a short period of time, leaving you dehydrated. Fevers can also cause dehydration, as they change your metabolism and breathing rate, causing your body to use more of its internal fluids. 
  • Excessive sweating: When you sweat more than normal, you lose fluids and it can be difficult to replenish them in time. Excessive sweating often happens during intense exercise or when you’re outside in hot weather for an extended period of time. When you’re in these conditions, drinking fluids proactively is key to preventing dehydration before it starts. 
  • Frequent urination: Some conditions, such as diabetes, can cause you to urinate more often than normal, leaving you dehydrated. Frequent urination is also a side effect of several medications. These include diuretics as well as some blood pressure medications and SSRIs. 

Symptoms of Dehydration 

Dehydration affects many of the body’s most crucial organs and systems, causing a variety of symptoms. Knowing the symptoms of dehydration is important so you can identify and treat it quickly when it arises. 

Here are some of the most common dehydration symptoms for adults: 

  • Extreme thirst
  • Dry mouth
  • Fatigue
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Confusion, delirium
  • Less frequent urination, darker urine 
  • Muscle cramps
  • Flushed skin
  • Constipation
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Chills

Dehydration often presents differently in children than in adults. Here are some signs of dehydration in children: 

  • Dry mouth, tongue, and lips
  • Lack of wet diapers
  • Lack of tears when crying
  • Rapid breathing
  • Sunken eyes
  • Dry, blotchy skin
  • Sunken spot on the top of the head

Factors Affecting Dehydration Recovery Time

Just like every person’s body is unique, so is their reaction to dehydration. Your body’s ability to recover from dehydration will vary depending on a variety of factors:

Severity 

The severity of your dehydration will directly affect your recovery timeline.

  • If your dehydration is mild, you’ll likely recover in just a few minutes after drinking water, resting, and moving out of the sun. 
  • Moderate dehydration takes longer to recover from and in some cases, may require professional attention.
  • Severe dehydration will require much more extensive treatment and recovery in a hospital. 
Health Conditions

If you struggle with chronic illness or other underlying health problems, it may take you longer to recover from dehydration. In particular, kidney problems can slow down your recovery time, as the kidneys are an important part of the body’s ability to process fluids. Diabetes can also make you much more susceptible to dehydration

Age 

Your age can also affect your body’s ability to recover from dehydration. Dehydration can be dangerous for babies and young children because it is usually caused by bouts of severe vomiting and diarrhea. This causes children to lose a very significant amount of fluids, which are difficult to replenish. 

Dehydration recovery also tends to take longer for older adults. This is because the body retains less water as you get older, so things like excessive sweating or frequent urination could deplete your fluids faster. Additionally, many older adults have underlying health conditions that can make it difficult to recover from dehydration. 

Rehydration Method

There are several different ways to safely rehydrate your body and each will affect how quickly you’re able to rehydrate. 

The first is obvious: consuming enough water daily (or other fluids intended for rehydration). Drinking water is the most accessible method of rehydration, but it can take time to kick in. Sports drinks typically contain sodium to help with fluid absorption, as well as electrolytes to replace those that have been lost during the dehydration process.

  • Drink water regularly: Don’t wait until you feel thirsty to start drinking water. Carry a water bottle with you and drink water regularly throughout the day. Keep in mind that you’ll need to drink more water when you’re exercising or in hot weather. 
  • Replace lost electrolytes: When you’re dehydrated, you also lose important electrolytes. If you’re prone to dehydration, you may want to use sports drinks or other supplements to replace them. 
  • Eat balanced meals: We get a significant portion of our fluids from the food we eat. Aim to eat three balanced meals each day. These should include plenty of fruits and vegetables, which have a high water content. 
  • Avoid diuretic drinks: Drinks like alcohol and coffee are natural diuretics, which means they can dehydrate you rather than replenish your fluids. Stay away from these drinks when you’re feeling prone to dehydration.
