Every year, about 476,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with and treated for Lyme disease. This bacterial infection can spread to the heart, joints, and nervous system when left untreated. While treatment usually involves antibiotics, some people complement their medications with an increasingly popular form of integrative care: ozone therapy. Here’s everything you should know about using ozone therapy for Lyme disease and where to find it in New Jersey, New York City, and Philadelphia.

Important: Ozone therapy has not been approved by the FDA to treat Lyme disease or any other health condition. Consult your healthcare provider before starting any new treatment.

Can ozone therapy help with Lyme disease?

Some researchers think that ozone therapy may help people manage Lyme disease by supporting immune function, reducing inflammation, and improving how the body uses oxygen, but more studies are needed to confirm these effects. While research has shown that ozone may indeed have antimicrobial and immune-modulating potential, no studies so far have found that it helps treat Lyme disease.

According to the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS), the most effective treatments for Lyme disease are antibiotics like doxycycline, amoxicillin, and cefuroxime axetil. But ozone therapy may work for some people as a complementary treatment alongside antibiotics when administered by a licensed healthcare provider. Some ozone patients have reported improvement in Lyme symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, and joint discomfort.

What is the best ozone therapy for chronic Lyme?

Researchers have not identified the “best” or most effective type of ozone therapy for chronic Lyme, but the most commonly used methods include:

  • major autohemotherapy (MAH), in which a nurse draws a small amount of blood from your vein, mixes it with oxygen and ozone gas, and reinfuses it into your vein through the same IV
  • 10-pass ozone therapy, which involves drawing blood into a sealed glass bottle, mixing it with oxygen and ozone under hyperbaric pressure, and reinfusing it up to 10 times in one session
  • high-dose ozone therapy, which involves two passes of blood through a UVBI machine, which exposes blood to ultraviolet light before and after it’s mixed with ozone
  • EBOO (Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation and Ozonation), in which blood is drawn, circulated through a special machine that exposes it to oxygen and ozone, and reinfused
  • Prolozone injections, in which a nurse injects medical-grade ozone gas into your body (often the joints, ligaments, or tendons)

The board-certified team at IV Elements can help you figure out which option is best for you based on your health and treatment needs.

Is ozone therapy for Lyme disease safe?

The FDA has not deemed ozone therapy as safe for Lyme disease, so the treatment is only used experimentally in integrative care settings. The most common safety concerns are ozone side effects like headache, nausea, and flu-like symptoms. Less common side effects include red blood cell breakdown and cardiovascular strain in vulnerable patients. Learn more about ozone therapy side effects.

Some people also have a Herxheimer reaction, which is a temporary physical response that some alternative medicine practitioners claim is linked to the body’s breakdown of Lyme bacteria. Symptoms can include:

  • fever
  • chills
  • sweats
  • body aches
  • fatigue
  • brain fog
  • trouble sleeping
  • irritability or mood changes
  • increased sensitivity to light or sound
  • temporary worsening of Lyme disease symptoms

These symptoms usually last for a few hours to a few days, but some people have them for a week or more. In that case, you should contact your healthcare provider. Although rare, Herxheimer reactions can have serious complications, including:

  • seizures
  • trouble breathing
  • stroke
  • heart problems
  • meningitis
  • early labor if pregnant

At IV Elements, our ER-trained nurses strive to make your ozone therapy experience as safe as possible by only starting treatment after a comprehensive consultation. We’ll gather information about your health history and request recent lab work to make sure ozone therapy is right for you.

How many ozone sessions do you need for Lyme disease?

When using ozone for tick-borne illness like Lyme disease, the number of sessions you need depends on your symptoms. Some people with milder symptoms start with 5 to 10 sessions, and others get 20 or more, especially for chronic symptoms. We’ll help you figure out the right treatment schedule during your consultation. We can also change your schedule at any time based on the way you respond to treatment.

How do I know if I should get ozone therapy for Lyme disease?

You should get ozone therapy for Lyme disease if your healthcare provider thinks that it could support your current treatment plan. To figure out if you’re a good candidate, your provider will consider your overall health, medical history, medications, and treatment goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ozone used in chronic Lyme protocols?

Ozone therapy is used in some chronic Lyme protocols in integrative care settings. Some alternative medicine practitioners think it may support Lyme disease treatment by improving immunity, decreasing inflammation, and helping the body use oxygen more efficiently. But more studies are needed to confirm these benefits.

Does ozone therapy kill Lyme bacteria?

As a strong oxidizing agent, ozone can kill bacteria in controlled lab conditions, but it hasn’t yet been shown to kill Lyme bacteria in humans.

Can ozone therapy be used alongside antibiotics?

Yes. Ozone therapy is often used with antibiotics like doxycycline, amoxicillin, and cefuroxime axetil, which are commonly prescribed for Lyme disease.

Who should avoid ozone therapy for Lyme disease?

You should typically not get ozone therapy for Lyme disease if you have:

  • anemia
  • an active bleeding disorder
  • serious breathing conditions like severe asthma or COPD
  • unstable cardiovascular disease
  • a G6PD deficiency

Also, in general, you should avoid the treatment if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Studies have not determined whether ozone therapy may have negative effects on fetuses or infants.

What other conditions can ozone therapy treat?

The FDA has not approved ozone therapy to treat any health conditions. But many alternative medicine clinics offer ozone therapy to help people manage issues like fatigue, diabetes, autoimmune conditions, respiratory conditions, and mold-related illness.

How much does ozone therapy for Lyme disease cost in NJ?

🌿 Story time with our nurse: A 40-year-old client came in struggling with extreme fatigue, brain fog, weakness, and numbness in her hands and feet. After running functional labs, we discovered high arsenic levels—signs of arsenic poisoning. With her active gardening lifestyle, exposure had accumulated over time. Our treatment plan included IV chelation therapy with disodium EDTA, helping to safely remove toxins and restore energy, clarity, and overall wellness.
Early detection of arsenic poisoning is key to recovery. Addressing arsenic poisoning with proper lab testing and treatment can dramatically improve quality of life.
